Rock Report review
I couldn't believe my eyes when I found out that Bob Catley's latest studio album, "Spirit Of Man", only landed on the 65th spot in our album poll of 2006. Following my five and a half stars review, no less than 19 RR members left their comments on the album as well as their personal scores and all of them varied between four and a half and six stars, with an average of 5,16/6. It must have been the release date - January 26 ?- that has caused this low end ranking! When it was time to vote for the best albums of 2006, everyone seemed to have forgotten about Bob Catley's brilliant album.
Anyway, here's the follow-up and I'm sure it will end up a whole lot higher than its predecessor. For "Immortal", Bob Catley has once again invited another songwriter and this time it was Magnus Karlsson who wrote all the songs. Knowing what he did for acts like Allen-Lande, Last Tribe and Starbreaker, it won't come as a surprise to you to learn that the new Bob Catley songs are all of an extremely high quality. All of the musicians who recorded "Spirit Of Man" with Catley are gone and have been replaced by seasoned 'specimens', such as guitarist, bassist and keyboarder Dennis Ward (who also produced the album), additional guitarist Uwe Reitenauer, drummer Dirk Bruinnberg (Elegy) and the inevitable Magnus Karlsson on keyboards (+ only one guitar solo on "End Of The World"). Compared with Catley's last two albums, the new one sounds a little less heavy, but is tending more towards the 'immortal' material of Magnum. Rounding off this beauty is another easily recognizable cover from Rodney Matthews, known from his work for acts like Asia and Magnum. From start to finish, this is another gem from the great Bob Catley. Don't forget to vote for him this time around. Otherwise the man with the sword on the album cover will find you.
