Rock Report reissue review
FORTUNE - Fortune - Gypsy Rock Records, 2004
When - earlier this year - Roger Scott Craig told me that he was going to rerelease the "Fortune" album, I was beside myself with joy. Most of you out there will agree with me that this album is a real classic and so it feels splendid to finally hold a copy on CD in my hands. Fortune was formed in the early 80s and derived its name from its founders Richard (guitars, vocals) and Mick Fortune (drums). The rest of the band consisted of Bobby Birch (bass, vocals, saxophone), L.A. Greene (lead vocals, guitar) and Roger Scott Craig (keyboards, vocals). We all know the latter two from Harlan Cage, but at the time they were already in top notch form as the main songwriters for the Kevin Beamish produced "Fortune" album. The band got signed by Camel/MCA, which released the self-titled album on October 21, 1985, containing such gems as "Thrill Of It All", "Bad Blood", "Dearborn Station" and - last but not least - "98° In The Shade". What makes this reissue (Gypsy Rock Records, 2004) even more interesting though are three previously unreleased bonus tracks, including the phenomenal song "Home Free", which was written in 1985 and recorded specifically for this 20th anniversary edition by all the original members. The other two bonus tracks are the songs "Breakin' Down The Door" and "Heart Of Stone", which were both recorded live on September 28, 1985 at the 'Rock N' Run' (with Fleetwood Mac) on the campus of the University of California (UCLA). No problem with the sound quality here, which means that this is the best reissue of the year!
Chris Lambert, November 2004
PS: "Fortune" was reissued a second time by AOR Heaven - as part of their ongoing AOR Heaven Classix series - on June 24, 2011, including the bonus track "Home Free", but without the two live bonus tracks. Digitally remastered by Chris Lyne, this reissue came with extensive liner notes from Dave Reynolds.
