Rock Report review
On Africa's Serengeti plain, a company of lions running free is known as a 'pride'. In the world of melodic rock there's a new 'pride' running wild now, and it's called Pride Of Lions: an exciting alliance between veteran Jim Peterik and 25-years old newcomer Toby Hitchcock. It was Serafino Perugino (president of Frontiers Records), who urged Peterik not to work with an established singer once again, but with an unknown who could be able to breathe new life into his songs. The search was over when a niece of Peterik introduced him to Toby Hitchcock. Peterik: "I was immediately intrigued by his tone and expression of emotion, then I was blown away by his 4 octave range". "Love Is On The Rocks" was recorded as a test, but turned out so well that the same, unchanged vocals were used for the end result of the song on this debut album! Following hot on the heels of the debut single (and video) "Sound Of Home" this "Pride Of Lions" is one of the best debut albums I've heard in many years. With 12 tracks, ranging from hard rocking songs as the opener "It's Criminal" or "Unbreakable" through mid-tempo tracks like "Gone" and "Love Is On The Rocks" to heartwarming ballads like "Interrupted Melody" (which sounds a bit like Europe's "Carrie") and "Last Safe Place", this is one hell of an album that can easily compete with the best AOR albums that were released in the 80s. An absolute contender for the best album of 2003: class is written all over it!
