Rock Report review
Seventh studio album from this top-class Swiss band and what was expected, has become true: gone is the polished sound of their last studio albums as it has made room for a sound that is comparable to the one we came to know on their sensational "G." album from 1996. The main goal of Steve Lee and his band members is to move forward and all kinds of changes can help achieve that goal. One of them was that (stage) guitar player Mandy Meyer was replaced by Freddy Scherer during the summer of last year. Marc Lynn remembered Freddy from the old China days and believe me, his recruitment is a real acquisition for the band. Not only did he play a part in creating some of the songs, he definitely brought a lot of new energy to the other band members as well. Another important change was the setting up of G. Records, which will enable the guys to access the music business in a new way. In Switzerland the new album will be released through G. Records, while it is licensed to Nuclear Blast for a list of 10 other countries, including the Benelux.
"Lipservice" counts a total of 14 songs that have been recorded in the band's own studio near the beautiful city of Lugano. Roland Prent did the mixing and the mastering in the famous Belgian Galaxy Studios, without adding any extras. "We didn't want the CD to give the impression of over-production, with too many effects and sounds", says Marc Lynn. Having that in mind, the producing team of Leoni and Prent concentrated on the essentials. What you get here as a result, is the best Gotthard album since "G.". Most songs are up-tempo and I haven't heard Lee and co. playing tighter (on a studio album) in the last decade or so. One point of criticism however: they sound a bit too much like Bryan Adams or Def Leppard on the track "Everything I Want", but for the rest you won't hear me complain. If you pulled out after the release of "G.", you can/may now easily pick up the thread again. Great album for this Swiss' pride and joy!
