Rock Report review
That Frontiers Records may be considered as today's best melodic rock label can be proven by two great albums that are being released by this Italian label these days. The first one is the (magnificent) seventh from Thunder, the second one is this (fabulous) ninth solo album from ex-Deep Purple and Rainbow vocalist Joe Lynn Turner. What makes me so happy about "The Usual Suspects" is that it brings us back to the glory days of Rainbow. JLT: "For the first time ever, I recorded the vocals in the comfort of my home. Gary Tole (Bon Jovi) engineered it. It's a return to something that was part of me, part of my past. It has big choruses, but also rocks hard in a lot of places. I am very proud of this album." I can only agree with Joe; so many songs refer to the past that I get the feeling that time has stood still for quite some years. If this album would have been released under the flag of Rainbow, I wouldn't have been surprised at all. For the recording of this album, all 'the usual suspects' were invited: Al Pitrelli and Karl Cochran on guitars, Paul Morris and Andy Burton on keys, David Z on bass and John O'Reilly on drums. All of them are well-known musicians who have been playing alongside Joe at one point in his impressive career. The best JLT album in years ... or should I say: the best Rainbow album?
