Rock Report reissues review
GIUFFRIA - Giuffria/Silk + Steel - Metal Mind Productions, 2010
Besides reissues of the two excellent albums from Boulevard, Polish label Metal Mind Productions has also rereleased two other absolute classics, being the only two albums from Giuffria. Both come as exclusive digipaks in limited editions (2,000 numbered copies) and ... on gold colored discs. Main man behind Giuffria was keyboard player Gregg Giuffria, who became prominent through the band Angel, with whom he released five albums. As soon as this band called it quits, Gregg started Giuffria, to make sure that his keyboards got the role they deserved. All who adore keyboard-laden AOR can't do without copies of both "Giuffria" (1984) and "Silk + Steel" (1986). The first one featured David Glen Eisley on lead vocals, Craig Goldy on guitars, Chuck Wright on bass and Alan Krigger on drums. Highlights on this debut album include opener "Do Me Right" (with swirling keyboards from the very start), the Journey-esque "Call To The Heart", the killer ballad "Lonely In Love" and the closing track "Out Of The Blue". With brilliant vocals from Eisley and excellent axework from Goldy, this is the best album of the two. "Silk + Steel" came two years later and featured guitarist Lanny Cordola (instead of Craig Goldy, who went to Dio) and bassist David Sikes (who took over from Chuck Wright, who returned to Quiet Riot). Highlights on this more polished second Giuffria album include the Willy DeVille song "I Must Be Dreaming", the killer "Change Of Heart", the rather heavy "Radio" and the ballad "Say It Ain't True", which comes as a bonus track taken from the soundtrack of "Gotcha!" Even though it contained too many ballads, this "Silk + Steel" was a good follow-up for the excellent debut album. After that second release the band lost its deal with MCA and folded. Part of the line-up went on to form House Of Lords. My scores: 6/6 for "Giuffria" and 5/6 for "Silk + Steel".
