Rock Report review
It was Iron Maiden's "Piece Of Mind" (1983) that set fire for a yet young Magnus Karlsson and he was only twelve years old when he started with a band of his own. He grew up studying classical music as well as folk music, jazz and metal and was finally awarded a master degree in music education. Around the millennium he came in contact with Frontiers Records and started the band Last Tribe, with whom he recorded and released three studio albums. Later he was asked by the Italian label to write for and produce some of their artists and bands, including Allen/Lande, Starbreaker, Bob Catley and Kiske/Somerville to name but a few. He also joined Primal Fear in 2008, with whom he has released two albums and successfully toured in several countries.
And now it's time for his first studio album, "Free Fall". As expected, he has done everything himself, except for the drum parts, that were given in the hands of Daniel Flores. "Free Fall" contains twelve original melodic rock/metal songs, of which three were sung by Karlsson himself. Further on you can read why he didn't perform all the songs himself, but he easily could have done so, because he has a great voice himself. Anyway, among the guest vocalists that pass in review are Russell Allen (Symphony X), Ralf Scheepers (Primal Fear), Tony Harnell (TNT), Rick Altzi (At Vance, Masterplan), David Readman (PC69), Mark Boals (Yngwie Malmsteen), Rickard Bengtsson (Last Tribe), Herman Saming (A.C.T) & Mike Anderson (Star One). "I've had the honour to collaborate with some of the greatest singers and musicians in the world," explains Magnus, "artists who have made my life richer with their magical music. On this album I got the chance to write tailor made songs for some of my absolute favourite singers. I was thinking: what would I really like to hear from this or that guy and then I wrote the songs. It's like if I'm missing a song with my favourite singer in my record collection, then I just make that song for him! I listen like a fan and I write like a fan. Well, I am a fan!". The result is a mighty fine album that perfectly holds the middle between melodic rock and melodic metal, featuring wonderful cover artwork from Felipe Machado Franco. Hopefully more solo albums of the same quality will follow from this jack-of-all-trades in the future. Start that free fall!
